Dear Sackler Community,

As we get set to kick off a new academic year, I want to give you details on our major career related events for the Fall term.

Our first BEAT Seminar of the year brings us master entrepreneur and Tufts benefactor, Bill Cummings, who will pass on his knowledge, passion and creativity that have led to his remarkable business success. His talk is on Thursday, September 6 at 6 pm in Sackler 114. RSVP by August 30 and you will receive a copy of his book “Starting Small and Making It Big”. Light food and beer/wine will be available.

We have expanded our relationship with Sarah Cardozo Duncan, Career Strategist, to provide additional group and one-on-one career advising to all Sackler Students and postdocs. She will offer a one-day workshop on Monday, September 10 to introduce the steps and strategies for beginning a career in the biomedical or biotech industry. After attending this workshop, you will be eligible to sign up for a one-on-one session with Sarah to discuss individual career goals and strategies. Advanced registration for the workshop is required and is limited.

Sackler, The Friedman School of Nutrition and the School of Public Health will host professional storytellers and teaching artists Andrea Lovett and Karen Chace who will present an introductory VOICE (Visualization, Oral Presentation, Inner Dialogue, Characterization and Expression) storytelling workshop on September 20 from 6 PM to 8 PM in Sackler 507. This workshop will offer a taste of science communication, and the opportunity to register for, a three-session series titled “Integrating Stories with Science”. Advance registration is not required. Additional information is available here!

An Entrepreneurship five-session short course will be offered in November. Led by Jack Derby, Director of the Tufts Entrepreneurship Center, the course will introduce students to entrepreneurship; business, marketing and finance plans; and what you can do now to begin to think as an entrepreneur. More details to come later. Finally, please plan on welcoming our new students at the annual Welcome Reception on Tuesday, September 4 at 3:30 in the Jaharis Courtyard. I hope to see you there.
