MD/PhD (MSTP) Program

Medical student

The Sackler School, in conjunction with the Tufts University School of Medicine, offers the opportunity for highly qualified individuals to pursue a combined MD/PhD degree. Our program is supported by a Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) grant from the National Institutes of Health.

Application is coordinated with Tufts University School of Medicine and the American Medical College Application System (AMCAS). Applicants admitted to the MD/PhD program are admitted to both the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences and Tufts University School of Medicine in a combined application and interview process.  Prospective students must apply through the AMCAS. Information on AMCAS and the admission process and the time line for admissions are available on the School of Medicine web site.

The MD/PhD program also offers admission through a Second Portal Program that is open to medical students enrolled at Tufts University School of Medicine. Applications are invited early in the spring semester of the second year of medical school. Successful applicants begin graduate studies after completion of Step I of the USMLE in July. Candidates for this track must demonstrate strong interest and accomplishment in research prior to and during the first two years of medical school.
