Basic Science Division Students
Orientation for new students in the Basic Science Division always falls on the first Tuesday after Labor Day. You will receive an email with the location. Please watch for the message!
The formal program typically begins at 9 am with check-in prior to the start of the program. If you have been awarded a stipend, plan to arrive soon after 8:15 am. A representative from Tufts Human Resources will be present to verify your I-9 documentation. As described in the section on Stipends, you need to follow the instructions for I-9 completion and verification in order to receive your stipend.
A full orientation schedule will be emailed to you prior to the date. However, a typical orientation program includes a welcome from the Dean of the Sackler School, a panel discussion with current students, an overview of the library and information technology resources, and a training session presented by the Office of Equal Opportunity. There is also a lunch with faculty, students, and staff from your program.
Please dress comfortably, remember your I-9 documentation if you have been awarded a stipend, and be prepared to have your ID photo taken if you have not already done so.
Following the formal orientation program, a school-wide reception will be held. Classes typically begin the day after orientation.
You will also be required to complete safety training. If your work will involve the use of laboratory animals, you will also need to complete this training. These sessions will be scheduled soon after you arrive on campus.
All basic science students, both Master’s and PhD, must be continuously enrolled, and do not have summers off. While exact schedules are worked out with the supervising faculty in the lab, students receive 15 work days of vacation a year, and are otherwise expected to be in the lab when they are not in class.
