Appointment of Richard A Van Etten MD PhD

Dear Medical Center Community,

It is with great pleasure that we announce the appointment of Richard A. Van Etten, MD, PhD, as Director of Tufts Medical Center Cancer Center.  Rick has accepted this new role in addition to his current position as Chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology, a position that he has held since 2006.

As Director of the Cancer Center, Rick will be responsible for integrating the many programs and shared resources that impact on basic, translational, and clinical cancer research across the Medical Center, the Physicians' Organization, and Tufts University and the Medical School, in order to position us to be recognized as a National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center.

Rick is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking research focusing on chronic myeloid leukemia and other hematological malignancies.  He directs a research laboratory, funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, at the Medical Center's Molecular Oncology Research Institute (MORI).

Rick received both his medical degree and Ph.D. in Biophysics from Stanford University School of Medicine and completed his postgraduate training in Internal Medicine and Hematology at Brigham and Women's Hospital.  He is an Associate Editor of the journal Blood and chairs the Myeloid Neoplasia Committee of the American Society of Hematology (ASH).  He is the Scientific Program Co-Chair for the upcoming ASH Annual Meeting in December.

Please join us in congratulating him on his new appointment, where he will play a key role in advancing the Cancer Center.
