Research Synopsis
My work is focused on the development of methods to measure the quality of hospital care, on the design and evaluation of local and national quality improvement efforts, and on studying the effectiveness of common inpatient therapies. I am working on the development of methods to translate research into practice for patients with acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. I am interested in studying the effects of structural and policy oriented approaches to accelerating improvements in quality, especially the use of public reporting and financial incentives, and the hospitalist model of care. Using highly detailed billing data, our group has conducted numerous effectiveness studies for patients hospitalized with pneumonia, COPD and septic shock, and for patients undergoing major noncardiac surgery.
