Research Synopsis

Inherited retinal degenerations afflict 1.5 million people worldwide. The degenerations are progressive, resulting in night blindness, loss of peripheral and, finally, central vision. Currently there is no cure for the disease. Mutations have been mapped to more than 140 genes. To investigate the cellular mechanisms leading to photoreceptor cell death, my lab has produced transgenic mouse models with defects in visual genes. These transgenic mice are investigated using combined molecular biological, biochemical, histologic, and electrophysiological approaches.
