Research Synopsis

We are interested in how innate immunity contributes to early inflammation in atherosclerosis. Current projects are focusing on the role of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) in the development of lipid-rich lesions in hypercholesterolemic mice. Studies are determining the mechanisms by which TLR4 signaling alters cholesterol metabolism in smooth muscle cells. We are also determining the role of TLR4 in regulating the production of chemokines, and pro-inflammatory vs. anti-inflammatory cytokines in intimal smooth muscle cells that surround early lesions.
