Applications for the TEACRS program are accepted on an annual basis. To be eligible for TEACRS, an applicant must have no more than 2 years of prior postdoctoral experience at the time an appointment is made. TEACRS trainees are appointed for a training period of up to four years, during which they are supported by a stipend and an annual travel and research supply allowance.

The application deadline is March 1, 2017 for the coming year, but applications may be considered throughout the year if positions are available. Usually new fellows begin their training by September 1st of each year.
Applicants must be American citizens or permanent residents at the time of their appointment to the program. Our ideal candidate is someone who is passionate about research, has a love of teaching and does not view teaching as a necessary inconvenience associated with a faculty position, and is committed to increasing diversity in the academic environment.
The NIH and TEACRS encourage applications from those currently under-represented in biomedical research as defined by the NIH. Currently, these include, but are not limited to African-Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, people with disabilities and members of groups that are economically or socially disadvantaged.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to identify the research mentor prior to the application process, and to discuss this choice with the Program Director. Candidates may also apply to TEACRS without having designated a mentor by the application deadline and work with the Program Director to select someone appropriate for their research interests. However, these applications will be reviewed only if a mentor has been finalized by the time of the Advisory Committee meeting, which is typically about three weeks after the application deadline, or if positions open up later in the year.
The Advisory Committee of the TEACRS program will review all applications and select fellows for appointment. Commitment to the goals of the program, strong academic and research credentials and demonstrated interest in teaching, mentoring and active citizenship are important criteria used in the selection process. The research and training experience of the research mentor are also considered.
