My focus is on understanding to what extent the release of gliotransmitters is state-dependent. Do astrocytes release different gliotransmitters at different stages of the sleep-wake cycle? How do they do so? How does this impact neuronal function during arousal or contribute to sleep-homeostasis? Those are some questions I am examining using diverse approaches such as electrophysiology, behavior, molecular genetics, optogenetics and calcium imaging.
