My present studies are aimed at understanding the role of the ubiquitin proteasome pathway and autophagy in the degradation of modified proteins resulted due to dietary glycemia in lens and retina epithelial cells. Specifically, my interest is to define the role of p62 mediated selective autophagy and Nrf2/Keap1 role in the clearance of aggregated proteins generated as a result of glycative stress. Further research plans are focused in formulating nutritional and pharmaceutical strategies that both improve the cellular protein quality control and the clearance of aggregated proteins in aging and age-related diseases such as age related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataract.
