My research addresses several problems in how we understand the pathobiology of multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. Focusing on the highly resistant superbug Acinetobacter baumannii, I aim to elucidate the connections between antibiotic treatment and virulence, and to identify novel functions intrinsic to the biology of the pathogen that are required for resistance to antibiotics. Over the long term I hope to use this information to develop novel chemotherapeutic targets for controlling multidrug-resistant microbes.
