My research focuses on host innate immune responses to Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent for Lyme disease; specifically, the phenomenon of immune tolerance, where repeated stimulation of murine macrophages with B. burgdorferi has been shown to dampen inflammatory responses downstream of immune receptors. I am currently trying to understand the mechanisms by which B. burgdorferi induces such an immune tolerance phenotype both in an in vitro and in vivo setting and also to examine the extent of persistence of B. burgdorferi-induced tolerance in murine immune cells.
