I am using single molecule FRET to observe the dynamics of viral envelope proteins, including Ebola virus glycoprotein, on the surface of virus particles before and after they are bound to protective monoclonal antibodies. By understanding the different conformational states of these viral proteins we hope to design vaccine antigens that more closely resemble conformations with fully exposed neutralizing epitopes that can efficiently elicit neutralizing antibodies in vivo.
