I am working on the physiological determinants of bacterial colony formation within deep tissue sites by the enteropathogen Yersinia pseudotuberculosis. I have demonstrated that the bacteria form a microaerobic niche that takes advantage of host reactive nitrogen intermediates to promote efficient colony formation and am exploring the mechanisms behind this in more depth.
