Exosomes are a class of small membranous vesicles derived from the endocytic pathway that are ubiquitously secreted by eukaryotic cells. Exosomes contain a diverse cargo of nucleic acids, proteins and lipids and are believed to play a critical role in cell-to-cell communication, much of which is still largely uncharacterised within the CNS. Under pathological conditions, exosome secretion and altered cargo content are implicated in the pathogenesis of many human diseases. My research focuses on characterising exosomes derived from different cells of the CNS and their role in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Fragile X Syndrome (FXS).
