The apicomplexan parasite Cryptosporidium causes diarrhea in young children and immunocompromised hosts such as HIV/AIDS patients in resource-limited countries worldwide. Since there is no effective treatment for cryptosporidiosis in these populations, novel therapies are urgently needed. I am utilizing 2D and 3D stem-cell-based human intestinal enteroid-derived models to elucidate host and parasite transcriptomes during infection using RNA Seq technology. A second project aims to generate transgenic C. parvum gp40/15 knockout and epitope-tagged lines. gp40/15 is a surface glycoprotein important for parasite attachment and invasion of host cells.
