Mycobacterium tuberculosis continues to be a major infectious disease killing over one million people per year world wide. One interesting aspect of the disease is the variability in infection outcome within an individual with some areas of the lung successfully containing the bacteria while others are overwhelmed allowing the bacteria to proliferate. My research analyzes whether heterogeneity in the state of signaling networks at the single cell level can explain differences in infection outcome.
