Fentanyl is the primary opiate agonist which is commonly used during the perioperative period. Reports show that epileptic patients treated chronically with carbamazepine have higher fentanyl requirement during maintenance of anesthesia. Therefore, I am investigating whether carbamazepine can induce cytochrome P450 (CYP450) activity and enhance metabolism of Fentanyl by measuring the plasma clearance, volume of distribution and half-life of fentanyl in patients who receive carbamazepine.
