Postpartum depression(PPD) is a major depressive episode that affects new mothers around the period of childbirth. Clinical data suggests that women who engage in risky maternal behavior like alcohol use before and during their pregnancy are more vulnerable to develop PPD. Also, women who suffer from PPD are more likely to re-initiate drug use (relapse) during this period. Previous work in the Maguire laboratory demonstrated that HPA axis dysregulation increases vulnerability to PPD. The aim of my thesis project is to determine the mechanism underlying PPD and peripartum binge drinking.
