2014 Pathways to the PhD Participants

The Pathway to the PhD (P2P) program provides a mentored, 3-week research-intensive experience during January break for UMass Boston sophomore and junior undergraduates who like science and want to learn how to make it their career choice.

P2P participants learn modern research techniques, how research and clinical training differs, how many career paths are open to research scientists, and the steps they need to take to obtain PhD training.

Doctoral students from the Tufts Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences and Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy guide the P2P undergraduates in laboratory work on nucleic acids, proteins, and lipids. The undergraduates participate in panel discussions with students from each of the Sackler PhD programs and learn about the Pipeline Programs at the Tufts Boston campus.

Although the focus of the P2P experience is the research experience, participants receive guidance in how to apply to summer research internships and post-baccalaureate programs, how to apply to PhD and MD/PhD programs, and how to finance a graduate education.

P2P participants also have the opportunity to invite their family members to an evening reception and dinner to introduce them to the opportunities at Tufts.
