Precise yet flexible signaling systems are essential for proper metabolic function, while dysfunction may result in disorders such as obesity, diabetes and eating disorders. Yet given the heterogeneous cell types, complex neural circuitries and the lack of tools for precise manipulation, the CNS regulation of energy balance and the pathogenesis in a disease state remain elusive. Utilizing a series of molecular, synaptic and systemic approaches employed by the Kong lab, I seek to decode the genetic and circuit mechanisms underlying an essential group of neurons in the hypothalamus necessary for orchestrating energy homeostasis.
