Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) is a gram negative, black-pigmented, anaerobe of the oral cavity that is associated with periodontal disease. We have isolated several strains of probiotic species (Lactobacillus, Streptococcus, etc.) that are capable of inhibiting Pg-induced cytotoxicity of oral epithelial cell lines as well as antagonizing Pg growth in vitro. We aim to employ transposon mutagenesis libraries in both Pg and probiotic species coupled with high-throughput sequencing to identify the genetic components of these interspecies interactions.
