Previous work in the lab has uncovered that Vibrio cholerae possesses four independent histidine kinase receptors involved in its quorum sensing (QS) circuit. Together these receptors function in parallel to activate the key regulator LuxO, which is essential for virulence of this pathogen. My project aims to define the individual contribution of each of the four QS receptors to LuxO activation during V. cholerae growth in vivo. Further, we will seek to determine how each QS receptor affects the temporal dynamics of virulence factor production by monitoring gene expression at the single cell level.
