Necrotic neuronal death has been linked to glutamate-dependent excitotoxicity in disease processes such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, and neurodegenerative diseases. However, the mechanisms and pathways leading to this type of necrosis remain to be defined. Using C. elegans as a genetic model, I studied the role of glutamate receptors in excitotoxic pathways that ultimately lead to cell death with a focus on ubiquitin regulation of glutamate receptor activity.
I am now completing the fourth year of medical school.
