Klebsiella pneumoniae, a gram negative pathogen, is capable of infecting a wide range of host tissues, including the lung and the gut. My research is focused on identifying critical host metabolites K. pneumoniae consumes during infection. I am also interested in the role neutrophils play during the infection. Neutrophils are the first line of host defense against pathogens, and are recruited in great numbers to the site of inflammation. I am particularly interested in whether K. pneumoniae takes advantage of metabolites produced by neutrophils as a virulence mechanism.
