My thesis is centered around the parasite Cryptosporidium, an important waterborne parasite that causes diarrheal disease worldwide. Currently, there is no vaccination or effective treatment and those that are immune compromised are at a high risk of complications from infection. My work focuses on characterizing a family of enzymes, polypeptide GalNAc transferases, that are involved in O-linked glycosylation of proteins involved in attachment and invasion to host cells. It is our hope to identify potential targets for vaccine and therapeutic development.
