Co-infection by influenza virus and the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is major cause of morbidity and mortality in the elderly. To better understand the basis of age-associated susceptibility to this co-infection, as well as to develop preventative and therapeutic strategies, I am investigating the pathogenesis of influenza-pneumococcus co-infection in murine models focusing on the potential efficacy of oral supplementation with vitamin E, an antioxidant with potent immunoregulatory activities.
