Corneal neovascularization (CNV) leads to the loss of visual acuity, reduction in corneal transparency, and ultimately blindness. The mechanism by which the cornea remains avascular during homeostasis remains to be fully elucidated. Recent data from our lab has shown the role of corneal resident immune cells in maintaining an avascular cornea. In addition to being involved with avascularity, these immune cells are also found to be intimately associated with neurons. The association between neurons and immune cells suggests a potential neuroimmune crosstalk. This crosstalk may regulate immune cell functions such as maintaining homeostasis and avascularity. My project centers on this area.
