While insulin-dependent type 1 diabetes (T1D) is ultimately attributed to the destruction of pancreatic ß cells by autoreactive T lymphocytes, it is clear in the T1D prone NOD mouse model, and also likely in humans, that B-lymphocytes play an additional key pathogenic role. My project is to determine to what extent would a B-lymphocyte targeting strategy attenuate or prevent the development of T1D.
