The Howell lab is working toward a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying Alzheimer's disease. We apply genetic and genomic strategies in mice to identify biological process that are involved in the susceptibility to and early development of the disease. For my thesis, I will be investigating the role(s) of APOE and cholesterol to Alzheimer's disease. APOE is the strongest risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease and is involved in cholesterol trafficking and the clearance of beta-amyloid, key processes in the healthy brain. I will study how variations in the APOE gene negatively impact these processes and lead to the onset and progression of Alzheimer's disease.
