My project focuses on understanding the genetic mechanisms that allow Legionella pneumophila, to replicate and survive inside mammalian cells, a mechanism that involves the pathogen’s type IV secretion system. Five of these translocated effectors also modulate host translation by inhibiting translation. My initial focus is on understanding how these factors modulate host translation and evade the host innate immune response.
