Starting in the second year and continuing through the fourth year,
each student presents an annual journal club to the entire program
(students, faculty, postdoctoral fellows and staff).
With
the advice of the thesis mentor, the student chooses one or more papers
of general interest that provide new and important insight into a
compelling question in microbiology. The student is expected to place
the paper in its appropriate context in terms of previous knowledge and
to examine critically the experimental approaches and interpretation of
results.
Some students choose to present subjects closely related to their thesis research; others opt to take on unrelated topics.
All students are required to attend all journal club meetings throughout their time in the program.
