Mammalian Genetics at JAX
The interdisciplinary Genetics Program offers strong research training focused on the application of genetic approaches to normal development and to disease. Genetics has taken center stage in biomedical research with the advent of large scale analysis approaches and the sequencing of the human genome. Hands-on laboratory experience is a cornerstone of the training, which also includes didactic and seminar-based courses. Faculty are exploring prokaryotic, eukaryotic, mammalian, and human genetics. Their research topics span a range that includes cancer genetics, developmental and neurogenetics, microbial and yeast genetics, the genetics of bacterial and viral pathogens, Drosophila genetics, and human genetics and gene discovery.
Mammalian Genetics at JAX, a track within the Genetics PhD Program provides trainees with the opportunity to study at The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine. This unique collaboration brings together a strong faculty focused on mammalian genetics and provides expanded training opportunities for students in the track who do their dissertation research at The Jackson Laboratories.
A second unique aspect of the Genetics Graduate Program is our strong link to the Tufts Medical Center and Floating Hospital for Children ACGME-accredited Medical Genetics residency program. The faculty of this program offer physicians post-graduate training in reproductive and perinatal genetics as well as cytogenetic technology, genetic counseling, dysmorphology, and perinatal diagnosis. Genetics graduate students have the opportunity to attend Medical Genetics Rounds and interact with physician trainees, activities that give students a special appreciation for genetic diseases that affect people.
