First Year ISP Journal Club
Students participate in a series of journal clubs, each under the direction of a member of the ISP faculty. The club meets for several hours on one afternoon each week throughout the first year. With the help of an ISP faculty, one student chooses a recent research paper to critically review that is on a topic presently being discussed in courses. Other students in the group are each responsible for critically reviewing one figure in the paper. The course aims to train all students in the critical reading of the scientific literature, to make the current literature available to the students and to provide significant opportunities for students to improve their presentation skills.
Biochemistry Journal Club
Annually from years 2-5 students choose a recent research paper of interest to present to the entire Biochemistry Department. They use skills developed in the First Year ISP Journal Club to critically evaluate the significance of this paper. Three faculty members of the Program give the students constructive criticism of their presentations.
Structural and Chemical Biology Research Group
This group brings together structural biologists, enzymologists, and drug designers in a mixed format that includes journal club and seminar presentations. This activity is not a formal part of the Biochemistry curriculum, but provides an important forum for all who are interested in the topics that are the focus of the group. More information about this activity can be found at the SCBRG web site.
