The PhD programs in the Basic Science Division of the Sackler School are designed to prepare students for research-focused careers in academic institutions of higher learning or in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry. An integrated approach to the study of biomedical research problems is infused with strong discipline-based training in each of our eight programs.
Our education focuses on laboratory-based research and students begin this aspect of their training with laboratory rotations soon after they arrive on campus. Didactic and seminar-based courses complement the research training and help students identify and solve important research questions. When students complete their education in one of our PhD programs, they will have mastered approaches to biomedical research and most importantly be comfortable identifying and solving problems of scientific importance in an atmosphere that values collegiality and collaboration as well as independent thinking.
Trainees in the Clinical Research PhD program are typically physicians or other health care professionals who have already obtained an advanced degree. The additional training provided by a PhD in Clinical Research positions these individuals for academic careers focused on patient-centered research.
