My project concerns the development of an artificial neuromuscular junction based on a silk fibroin scaffold. This construct will hopefully serve as an in vitro model to researchers studying the spectrum of neuromuscular diseases, as well as provide the first steps to creating an autologous transplantable skeletal muscle tissue graft to be used as a surgical implant in cases of trauma and other muscular or neuronal atrophy.
