Vitamin D is mostly known for its role as a pro-hormone in skeletal development – its main metabolite, calcitriol, is a potent steroid hormone that is required for proper bone formation. Over the past two decades, calcitriol has been found to affect most tissue types throughout the body. Calcitriol has been implicated in various cellular and developmental phenomena such as apoptosis, proliferation, differentiation, inflammation, invasion, angiogenesis and metastasis. In addition, vitamin D deficiency has been correlated with aggressive cancer development, increased incidence of cancers and worse outcomes, although randomized human clinical trials have not yet provided conclusive evidence on the efficacy of vitamin D supplementation on cancer prevention and treatment. Using our lab's hormone responsive 3D culture model, my project focuses on elucidating the role of vitamin D/calcitriol in mammary gland development and breast cancer
